We also have a wonderful problem that needs solving! The response to the car seat recycling has been tremendous, but now we need some help getting the seats disassembled. The group at Legacy is looking to start a monthly Saturday morning event to help disassemble all of the car seats. For more information call Tammy Franks at 503-413-4005

Cans Food Festival
September 17, 2008

On September 25, Regal Cinemas will reward you for bringing in outside food.

All shows except for “no pass” attractions are subject to this; bring three nonperishable food items and get a ticket and a small popcorn. Especially needed are peanut butter, rice, stews, chili, et ceteral.

I happen to know that Safeway had three cans of Chunky Soup for $5 this past weekend. You could really save some coin, do some good for others and enjoy a flick.

Get a list of participating theaters.

Maggots in My Sweet Potatoes is an in-depth, illuminating, and often heartbreaking look at the lives of women who end up in jail. Dramatic portrait photography coupled with interviews with inmates, deputies, as well as medical experts, raise questions about the powerful role of childhood experiences in shaping the people we become, and reveals an overcrowded, strained incarceration system increasingly unable to deal with the mental, emotional, and addiction problems women bring with them behind bars. Maggots is the first in a trilogy of books released by Humane Exposures, a socially driven project geared toward public awareness and education about a society at risk.

Nancy Farmer: The Land of Silver Apples
September 21, 2008

I like this book and its predecessor, the Sea of Trolls. I like it because I enjoy the ancient Irish history. These novels bring together Saxons, Vikings and the Irish. It also brings together the “old faith” and the “new faith” of Christianity.

These stories work with Jack, a young man who is learning his strength as a Bard. He has been taken under the wing of the old Bard. In The Land of Silver Apples he travels to a monastery where they had a beautiful stained-glass window. The chief of the area is a half-selkie.

Jack and his friends eventually have to go beg a boon from the “lady of the lake” – and the elves and trolls who live underground. He grows up a little both as a Bard and also as a man.

It’s a good story.

Rick Riordan: Teen Author Lecture
September 22, 2008

Rick Riordan is coming!
He’ll be doing the October Teen Author Lecture for the Multnomah County Library. It’s 7PM on Oct 13; tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults. He’s the author of the fun Percy Jackson series, a fantasy about a son of Poseidon.

When my daughter heard the news, she squealed as if he were a rock star. I guess he’s a rick star. :)

McFood is People!
September 24, 2008

Not to turn you totally against McDonalds; I eat there often. But here’s an interesting photo of a hamburger from 1996. That is, it’s a current picture of a burger that’s older than my children.
